This Droid, unlike R2D2, runs on Google. And if there's one OS that all eyes are on to see if they can take a bite out of Apple, it's the Google Android OS. Even RIM's BB OS is no longer being seen as a competitor for Apple so much as the enterprise camp to Apple's multimedia jungle. But now here's the Android system, the internet ring of this 3-ring mobile OS circus...or maybe it's the big top itself, since enterprise and multimedia require internet to function. And that, in a nutshell, is why everybody, including Apple, is scared of Google. Now as the for the Motorola Droid...
There have already been several other Google phones put to market since Android first came out. So what's the big hubbub about the Droid? Why does everyone seem to think this is the smartphone that will finally outdo the iPhone?
1. Price. The cheapest Droid is $99; the cheapest iPhone $199. But AT&T is rumored to be trying to change that with a $99 8GB iPhone supposedly coming out in time for the holidays.
2. Keyboard. The Droid has a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a good, tactile, responsive one at that. The iPhone has none.
3. Android 2.0. Like iPhone 2.0, this is first major upgrade to the Google mobile OS, and in this case, as most others, that means major improvments. But Apple did pretty well with their iPhone 2.0 upgrade.
4. 5 megapixel digital camera. That's on par with any decent digital camera that doesn't have a phone attached. The iPhones meager digital camera has always been one of its downfalls, and here Moto takes full advantage of that.
5. The internet. Yes, we know we said that, but it bears repeating because as great as Google's reputation is for all things web, that's how poorly the iPhone'sweb capabilities have always been rated. Here, again, this time thanks to the zippy Verizon network, the Droid prevails.
However, as new and shiny as the Google Android OS may be, neither it nor Motorola and Verizon's articulation of it in this Droid still pales in intuitiveness and user-friendliness to the "all-powerful" iPhone. Maybe someday, but for now...these are not the Droids you're looking for.

Motorola has recently released a new phone called the Droid X (Extreme). It has recently received a lot of hype, especially for the fact that it allows you run multiple apps at once. But is this?cell phone superior to?the iPhone 3G, which has been one of the best selling smart phones since its release in '09? Let's find out.
Let's begin by examining the Droid X. It runs on Android 2.1 OS with latest MotoBlur extensions and will soon be updated to Android 2.2. Motorola Droid X has 1 GHz TI-OMAP 3630 processor which allows it to run multiple applications at the same time while performing all tasks twice as fast as its competitors. It also comes standard with 512Mb RAM and 8GB of memory and you can add up to 32GB of additional memory through the SD card slot (which is also the most out of any other phone). It also comes with one of the largest touch screens: 4.3" inches 854 X 480 resolution. This phone also has a very comfortable keyboard, which lets you type without lifting your fingers. It is also equipped with an 8MP camera which is better than anything that other phones have.
Now let's take a look at the iPhone 3G. It runs on the Apple's iOS, which has more apps for it at this point than the Android. It has the ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz processor which is very fast, although not quite as fast as the Droid's. It has a 3.15MP camera and, even though it's smaller than the Droid's, it has a better flash and the quality is really good. It also has a 3.5 inch TFT touch screen with 16 million colors and a 320 x 480 resolution, which is pretty nice.
Now let's look at some similarities. They both have Bluetooth connectivity. They are equipped with Wi-Fi which allows you to connect to the internet. Their browsers let you easily go on Facebook, Twitter and other websites. Both phones have no physical keyboard, but the on-screen keyboard that they have is pretty comfortable.
So which phone is better? Well, at this point, if I had the iPhone already, I would not trade the iPhone 3G for the Droid X because it is still pretty new and it has more apps than the Droid. However, if I was buying a new phone, I would definitely get the Droid X instead of the iPhone 3G because it has superior hardware and because it'll have as many, if not more, apps for it as the iPhone 3G in a short time. So in a battle of the Motorola Droid X vs. Apple iPhone 3G, I would say the Droid X takes home the trophy.

With the recent release of the Motorola Droid this month, Apple's iPhone has its best competition yet. The Droid competes highly with the iPhone and really shines overall.
Available on Verizon's large 3G wireless network "We got a map for that", a slap in At&t's face, when it comes to showing there coverage map, for there "We have an app for that" campaigns. Also the first handset running Google's 2.0 android software. I've been testing out that Droid, MSRP $199, and these are my first few good and bad impressions.
Droid's Great Features:
Turn by turn GPS and street level maps in most places. This easily replaces your need of a Nuvi or cheap GPS solution, and to top it off has amazing maps that load up inside.
Verizon's high speed reliable network is amazing. I don't think I have had 1 dropped call, Vs. my T-Mobile that dropped on a daily basis, especially at my house.
Web browsing, using the built in web browser in the Droid, it's the fastest pages have ever loaded on and off a wifi network. Pages load way faster than my 2G iPhone, and blow away every other phone like the blackberry and there built in browser on page load times.
Google's integration to this phone are amazing, upon adding my friends name to my contact book it added his email address to the contact. Unless you have friends with the same names, then I'm sure it will guess right 100% of the time when it comes to auto-assigning people to there names.
Droid's Good features:
Battery life is better than some Smartphone's I have seen, but isn't the greatest. I run an application from the android market that closes applications that are not being used; this saves on my battery life greatly, but becomes a small hassle closing apps after a certain time. Auto close should be built in for later use with this phone.
Android marketplace has a great assortment of free apps and paid apps. Most top apps were modified within days of Droid's release and had 100% working droid updates for them. Slight modifications were needed running 2.0 vs. the other Android versions.
Choice of slide out physical keyboard, or touch screen keyboard. I really don't see why 2 keyboards are needed, but there are just times that you don't want to type out every letter and you can just use the quick onscreen keyboard that recognizes words nicely.
Droid's Bad features:
Music and video are a bit weird using the media player, especially with lack of a stop button and have to pause music to stop it, and the setup could be better.
Visual voice mail is also a great feature but at an added cost of $2.99 a month it's just not worth it to me especially on a phone that offers so many competing things that iPhone cannot deliver on.
Overall the Droid might not be the "iPhone Killer" that some hype it up to be. It is a undeniable competing entry in the race for the best. With native Free GPS features and Verizon's rock solid wireless network, you will be hard to compare iPhone to droid. Its comparing an apple to oranges, and now a days I guess I'm swayed towards oranges, because of the strings it has cut away from how I use my cell phone, and how well it blows away the competition.
Overall Grade A- other than a few small problems this phone is my choice and will stay my choice for years to come. I'm sure I will have Droid 2-3, and whatever replaces it after.

Wireless Connectivity: Both have same connectivity features including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. Droid X wins as its 3G connection can broadcast a Wi-Fi spot.
Camera: Droid X has 8MP camera compared to 5MP of iPhone but video chat and front-facing camera helps iPhone to win. Rear facing camera of both is capable of 720p video recording.
Flash Compatibility: Both are incompatible with Flash but Android 2.2 update is going to make flash compatibility available with Droid X.
Battery Life: iPhone has got the best battery life in smartphone industry and surely beats Droid X.
Size and Weight: Genuine comparison is difficult but photos show that there is very minuscule difference between them. The only noticeable thing is the hump of Droid X.
TV Connection: Both can connect to TV but Droid X leads as it connects via HDMI cable.
Miscellaneous: Droid X has a third microphone for better volume recording and comes with Swype functionality enabling faster touchscreen typing by sliding finger over keys instead of tapping them.

Key points to consider are, the Network the phone is established on, and the user experience on each phone.
The number one thing that should be considered is the service. The iPhone is married with AT&T, and the Droid is engaged with Verizon.
Verizon hands down has the best network service, with a greater 3G coverage than AT&T, and not to mention all those data hungry iPhones on AT&T sucking their GSM/HSPA towers dry daily. But, with AT&T's GSM/HSPA network is standard in mort parts of the world. Meaning, you can bring your iPhone when you travel and still be able to pick it up and make a call outside of the US.
Second thing to consider is the user experience. Okay, let me tell you, there is really no learning curve when you first pick up an iPhone. You grab the iPhone, you wake it up, and now you in the most simplistic, and incredibly intuitive design. Easily being considered the quickest learnable smart phone known to man. While the Motorola Droid was built upon meeting a set of features all crammed into one, rather huge interface scattered about. Not to bash the Droid and all. It does in fact pack a punch with its ability to multitask far better than an iPhone.
Well, like I said, its all about personal preference. I have been a Mac fan for a while, but I'm not fond of the AT&T service.
You have to consider all key points of both iPhone, and the Droid before reaching your decision.

Apple's iPhone has been renowned for the past two years as being the best phone on the market, largely in part to its widely popular "App Store," which to date has accumulated over 100,000 both free and pay applications that serve a large variety of purposes. It was also, up until recently, the fastest smart phone in the market. Google's first jump into the smart phone market, the aptly named "Droid," Has taken what apple has been known for and quite possibly made it better. It is still in its first operating system version, so there are a few minor glitches and bugs to be dealt with, but it is seemingly overwhelming the competition. With an app store similar to the iPhone, with an open source to all developers, not just approved ones, and a processor roughly twice as fast as that of the iPhone, the Droid is truly shaping up to be an iPhone killer. The iPhone is a more closed system than that of the Droid, Apple can approve and disapprove apps, and can clear the apps off of anyone's phone they feel is using it for less than honorable purposes. The Droid's "Android" software is much more open to the programmers, allowing them to develop as they wish without regard to approval, unless it violates a law of course. The apps are not always as polished as those on the iPhone, due in part to its relatively young life so far, but the ones that are greatly outperform those on the iPhone, especially those for mobile networking (Twitter, Facebook, etc.).
Both phones use a system of high speed connection known as 3G, but the difference in the way they use them and the effectiveness in which they operate is astounding. The Droid uses 3G in a situational way, whereas the iPhone's 3G is always on, greatly diminishing battery life. The networks on which the phones operate are also completely different. The Droid uses Verizon, which to date has the largest 3G network in the country, roughly tripling the area coverage of AT&T, the iPhone's sole carrier. The speedy network prevents calls from being dropped in almost any area, which is a common occurrence with AT&T's comparably miniscule network. This also enables the Droid to both surf the internet at a greater speed and run the astoundingly popular Google Maps application that it is bundled with, offering you turn by turn directions to your destination instantly. This is far superior to the clunky "Maps" application for the iPhone, which is neither as fast nor as easy to use.
Set-up on the Droid also takes barely 5 minutes. One simply logs into their Google account, and all of their contacts are immediately place in the phone and set appropriately. The Gmail integration is super clean as well. It's the most intuitive, full-featured e-mail solution yet seen on a smart phone. It also possesses a tangible keyboard that slides out, as opposed to the bumbling touch screen keyboard on the iPhone, and a 5 megapixel camera, roughly doubling the power of the one located on the iPhone. With features like these and the native GPS navigation and Verizon's powerful wireless network, it is sure to attract many customers looking for a phone that can do it all.

It is seemed that the iPhone is an artwork only to be collected, but the camera which is only with 2MP is a little useless. Android platform is supported by the strong Google, but it does not have the App Store and thousands of absorbing applications. The RIM BlackBerry is always hot, however, it looks a little ugly. Do you like to use the Windows Mobile Phone when you have seen the Microsoft windows mark for many years?
So the first problem is not without smart phone, but you don't know which one should be purchased.
The battle between Droid and iPhone is very interesting. Based on the Android platform, Droid is very strong. But it will never defeat iPhone in a short time because the latter has become the super star in the area of smart phone. If the Droid wants to defeat the iPhone, it has to take a long-term strategy, but not a fancy commercial. The market share of electronic products is decided by the use habit of users. For example, the Mac is so beautiful that it is seemed as the Venus goddess, and the spending on ads is about ten times than Microsoft Windows. But it is known that there is never a flood of people rushing towards Mac.
Now is about one week away from the release of the Verizon Droid, we do know that the commercials promise a real keyboard, night shots, open development platform, widgets(I don't think that it's better than App Store),customization and interchangeable batteries. 1. The slideout QWERTY keyboard doesn't mean a big phone, the Droid is only slightly thicker than the iPhone 3Gs.
2. A very big display, though no dimensions were given.
3. Runs Android 2.0 and will probably be the fastest Android smart phone yet.
4. Comes with a desktop charger.
It is said that the Droid will have a pretty 5MP camera.
Besides, Droid will have the better Internet experience. In order to catch up to the advance of its competitors, iPhone will plan to add the AJAX and Flash technology into it.

DROID Incredible Compared with iPhone 4
With the iPhone 4 now being officially released, the real question on everyone's mind is, "How is it going to stack up against the currently superior DROID Incredible?" Well, we finally have that answer, and it looks like Apple has done it again. The new iPhone 4 packs quite a punch especially considering many of it's features are not only comparably better than that of the DROID Incredible but also outside the realm of possibilities for the DROID Incredible due to Apple's proprietary software and hardware. This isn't to say that the iPhone 4 is better in every aspect however, there are many features that the DROID Incredible still offers that the iPhone simply can't match. Even so, it's been a hard fought battle up to this point for about the past year with regards to market share, but with this new release I see nothing short of a landslide victory in the coming months. The real competition that the iPhone 4 will now face is the HTC EVO.
A couple of reasons the DROID incredible has seen such a large gain in market share during this period is due to two reasons. One, the enormous marketing push to show how and why the DROID Incredible was better than the iPhone 3GS, plus the DROID Incredible's ability to multi task. Now that Apple's OS 4 operating system that comes with the iPhone 4 allows multi tasking though, the DROID Incredible may not be so "credible" at all. One of the biggest differences between the two platforms is the number of apps available for each. The iPhone 4 comes with the Apple Store's 215,000 plus apps, while DROID's Incredible can only boast around 70,000. The DROID Incredible comparably weighs in 4.59 inches (130 grams) and measures 4.63 inches (H) by 2.3 inches (W) by 0.47 inches (D). As you can see the differences here aren't that astonishing. The iPhone 4 dimensions differs slightly in weight and the depth is considerably thinner than that of the DROID incredible. This is as a result of many of the internal factors that Apple painstakingly designed in to fit perfectly in their new glass metallic casing. However, for most consumers, this really won't be a factor when considering which device to purchase.
Networks--Cellular/Wireless
Verizon and Alltel use the Dual Band CDMA 2000 system they offer for the DROID Incredible. AT&T will continue its affiliation with the iPhone 4 as expected, operating their GSM/EDGE network. As for wireless capabilities both the iPhone 4 and DROID Incredible offer 802.11 b/g/n. Additionally each also offer Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and I believe the new iPhone 4 is going to offer wireless tethering via the OS 4 release which will allow for automatic syncing much like the MacBook's and other current Apple devices.
The current cellular carrier, AT&T probably accounts for the majority of all complaints with the current iPhone 3GS. Some may find this to be a huge factor in which phone they choose, and AT&T and Apple both know this and thus have made promises to make their network much stronger. This would help to resolve the current issues of dropping calls and spotty 3G coverage that users complain of so often. The iPhone 3GS previously offered maps and directions via Google Maps through a proprietary app, but with the release of the iPhone 4 they will now have assisted GPS and also their all important standard "digital compass," which, in my opinion is probably the most useless item on the entire phone. Also, as before the location services will be performed via wi-fi and cellular triangulation services. As for the DROID Incredible, they will be offering Google Maps with Navigation, which has been offered on the previous DROID versions as well. There is not a huge difference here either but it would appear that the Android compatible DROID Incredible may have slightly better offerings as it is coupled directly with Googles navigation services and their support will be a decisive advantage for not only the DROID Incredible but all phones taking advantage of the Android OS.
Power and Battery
The iPhone 4 carries with it the power of a lithium ion battery which is rechargeable via a USB connection with a computer or by plugging it into a wall with a standard power adapter. DROID's Incredible can do the same thing and comes with rechargeable lithium ion battery too. The battery for the DROID can be taken out though which allows you the ability to replace it with another battery if the one your using goes dead. Who really cares though unless your going out of town somewhere like camping or something and don't have any outlets for power around anywhere and no car charger. If this is the case, you probably won't need to charge it anyway because you may just not want to deal with it for a few days.
Being the second phone to come to market has given the iPhone 4 a chance to step up its game a little in the battery department however in regards to talk, standby, and usage times. This new smartphone can give you a seriously nasty 7 hours of total talk time if your using 3G, 14 hours if using 2G, and when your on standby, you can get in the 300 hour range! Plus when it comes to internet use, surf around as much as you like for about 6 hours if using 3G and about 10 if using your Wi-fi connection. Plus if you love videos and music like some do, the iPhone 4 will offer about 10 hours of video play and when listening to your favorite music you will be able to chill for like 40 hours.
In comparison, the DROID Incredible offers around 312 minutes of usage time with 146 hours of standby via their provided specs on Verizon.com. Not nearly a match for the far more advanced and larger iPhone 4 battery. For most users who plug in their device every night anyway, this doesn't become a huge issue. For the power hungry and media intensive users however, the iPhone 4 may be the best option.
Memory Storage Capacity
Although the new iPhone 4 was expected to provide up to 64GB of internal memory, the actual spec came out to be the same as the iPhone 3GS upscale model at 32GB of total internal memory. They also offer a 16GB version much like was previously offered when the 3GS entered the market. By comparison the DROID Incredible offers a only 8GB of internal memory with expansion capability of up to 16 GB via a mircoSD card for a total 24GB of storage. This may not seem like an overly large difference until you consider the fact that you cannot store apps on the 16GB of external memory.
Both phones should be able to bring plenty enough memory for pretty much any and all users requirements. If you are a big fan of downloading a lot of different apps, the iPhone 4 is going to be the best option. If you use your smartphone for other things like music, videos, and photos however, the DROID Incredible may be the best choice for one main reason. You can place all your videos, music, and photos on to separate microSD cards and then swap in and out the cards depending on which medium you want to check out at that point. They really are both great options for varying reasons.
Display
Now is when the two phones begin to separate themselves with some pretty ENORMOUS differences. The DROID Incredible and the iPhone 4 were both pretty evenly matched until now. When Apple stepped up the competition to a new level with a display that brings an amazing 960 x 640 pixel screen resolution and 326 ppi, they rained on DROID's parade. The DROID Incredible has what was a fairly brilliant 800 x 480 pixel screen res, and a slightly larger display (3.7") than the iPhone 4 (3.5"). For the past few weeks I've been testing out the iLuv App Station, a portable iPhone dock that sells for $89.99 and comes with a free app that converts your phone into an old school alarm clock—with a techie twist.

WSJ's Jonnelle Marte reviews the iLuv App Station, an iPhone dock that allows your phone to double as an alarm clock, to determine if it's worth the $80.The app lets you wake up to any song on your iPod, and displays the time in the style of a vintage flip down clock.
The dock, officially named the iMM 190, is a small rounded black cube with three buttons: power, volume, and snooze. It also comes with a battery compartment for six AA batteries, and an auxiliary input port.
Setting up the dock was pretty easy. I just downloaded the free application from iTunes, plugged in the speakers, and docked the phone.
I liked the large digital time display and found the dock a natural fit for my night stand. And I loved having a real snooze button to hit in the mornings.
But I was frustrated that I needed to leave the app running all night long if I wanted the alarm to go off in the morning. That meant I needed to remember to re-launch the app before going to sleep. I worried that I would be late for work if I got a late night call or text message. (I always set a back-up alarm.)
Leaving the app running also meant I couldn't turn off the phone screen at night. I found that my phone was really bright, even at its dimmest setting. The first few nights I was awakened by what felt like a glowing orb of light at my bed stand. My solution was to set the app to its dimmest setting and turn the dock so it was facing away from my bed.
A spokesman for iLuv, Howard Kim, said the company plans to release an upgrade for the app by the end of this year that includes dimmer settings and more multi-tasking abilities so that settings like the sleep timer aren't reset every time you exit the app.
One thing I liked was that the speakers worked easily with any iPhone app, so I could use them to amplify the sound of YouTube videos or to stream Pandora or other radio apps.
I also liked the speakers' small size and portability. I found myself using them in the to the bathroom if I wanted to hear some music in the shower or to the kitchen if I needed some background noise while I was cooking.
But the speakers didn't perform as well in large spaces. I wouldn't have wanted to use them for a party or as my main entertainment system.
So is the iLuv worth it? I enjoyed the alarm clock and portable speakers, but I didn't love the price. By spending a little more than $90, I could get better speakers with a sharper sound. For now, I'm going to stick to my cellphone alarm clock and hold out for a system with features and a price that I can really fall in love with.
